Hypnotherapy for runners uses visualisation techniques to help you enjoy achieving your running goals.

When I started training for my first marathon, I spent as much time visualising the process of running those 26.2 miles as I did putting in those long training runs. 

Sometimes, I used the natural state of trance that can occur during a run and vividly imagined that I was running the actual London Marathon course, seeing the landmarks, hearing the cheering crowds, feeling the renewed motivation and determination as each mile passed.

Other times, I would simply lie back at home and play the same kind of self-hypnosis recording that I give to my sports performance hypnosis clients and enjoyed going into a relaxed state where I could feel all the feelings I wanted to feel on the big day – calm, confident, able to enjoy the moment, and even the immense pride at putting that medal around my neck.

I did this so many times that I often said that I ran a thousand marathons before I even hit the starting line.

I did this because the subconscious mind can’t tell the difference between a real situation and one that’s vividly imagined. So, by mentally rehearsing the process over and visualising every last part of my run going well, I was able to develop the same kind of mindset as I’d have if I’d already run the actual 26.2 countless times before.

That meant that when I finally stepped up to the starting line, I was entirely confident and entirely ready for every one of those miles to go just as I’d imagined. 

Don’t just take my word for it, though. 

Visualization for sports performance has been used by world-class athletes for decades, ever since the 1984 Olympics when researchers discovered that Olympians who used visualization techniques improved their performance.

Today, everyone from top-flight Premier League footballers to gold-medal-winning athletes use the same kind of techniques that I used to run my first marathon.

It’s these same techniques that I enjoy using with my hypnosis for running clients, helping everyone from first-time 5K’ers to elite ultra-marathon runners and triathletes achieve their goals.

How Do I Know If I Can Be Hypnotised?

One of the many reasons why I love working with runners is that many of us are so good at going into trance because we’ve had the experience of doing it all the time in our runs.

Ever had that moment when you’re deep into a run and it seems like your body is running on autopilot while your mind is off elsewhere? Maybe you’re thinking of your next big race or simply about that tasty post-run snack you’re going to have when you get home while your body does its thing without you paying attention to it.

That’s a lot like what hypnotic trance is like. The only difference is that instead of racking up the miles and increasing your heart rate, in clinical hypnotherapy I’ll be guiding you into a state of complete relaxation so that you can go even deeper into that trance state. 

Doing this means we can bypass your conscious mind and work directly with your subconscious, where all of that positive messages about how well you’re going to do can really take hold and form your new thought patterns and beliefs.

You don’t have to worry about losing control either. Much as with running, you’re always in control.

Even when your mind is off elsewhere during your run, there’s still a part of you that is aware of your surroundings and keeps you safe so that you don’t absent-mindedly run out into the middle of the road or knock-down a passing dog-walker.

The same applies in hypnotherapy. You can enjoy relaxing completely, knowing that you’re in complete control the whole time.

In fact, some people find that they can relax much more easily from the comfort of their own home and this can help us work together even better.
